The truck barely made it.
A 1970s Chevy loaded Beverly Hillbillies-style through Colorado snow flurries, through the high desert, down into Oregon's Willamette Valley — and across a narrow wooden private bridge onto the Battlecreek YWAM Base in Salem, where dozens of young strangers stopped what they were doing to watch two newcomers arrive like they'd landed from another planet.
The wine-red-and-yellow orchid print couch — the most expensive thing the new couple owned — was donated to base leaders Peter and Luba Illian within hours. No room in the dorms. Communal living meant communal property. It sat in the Illians' living room all summer, facing the picture window, fading.
Daniel watched it fade the way he had once watched the neighborhood kids' Sting-Rays from behind glass — present, adjacent, belonging without full possession.
Six months of Discipleship Training School. One other couple among roughly a hundred singles aged 18-30. The structure separated them: cooking rotations, cleaning crews, study halls, shared dorm sleeping. Together at night, surrounded by others. No privacy language. No framework for what was quietly being asked of the marriage.
The six months passed quickly.
He transitioned into Operation LORD — Long Range Development — for those who stayed on. Leadership identified what he already knew about himself: he was a builder. He was assigned to remodel the animal barn into a dining hall. He worked with passion while the team planned the move to Tacoma without him at the table.
The Amtrak trip to Arvada — visiting Tammela's mother Carol on inheritance funds — ended with Tammela standing abruptly in the dining car, scanning the room, crossing to a wall-mounted trash receptacle, swinging the hatch open, and emptying herself into it several times.
He thought: motion sickness. Maybe trains weren't for her.
He was not yet a father. He just didn't know it yet.
