650 square feet. 25 by 25, plus a closet and a carport. The only way they could get it was because Graham and Treena Kerr wrote a letter of character to the lender, and Tammela's trust account produced the 10% down.
Daniel did not yet own a truck.
He borrowed a YWAM friend's old beater for dump runs. The house needed everything: lath and plaster gutted to the studs, wiring upgraded, plumbing upgraded, insulation added where there had been none. And the ceiling — he vaulted it, opening the volume of a 650 SF box into something that felt like it had room to breathe. Carissa was on her way. The timeline was not negotiable.
He found the paned windows during the demolition phase — salvaged them, set them aside. They were for the addition he was already designing in his head: kids' rooms, a proper master suite, onto the back of the house. The builder was planning phase two before phase one was painted.
The interior he built as a gift.
Seven years of YWAM. Seven years of communal dorms and donated couches and volunteer stipends and no privacy. Tammela had given up more than she had been told she was giving up, and Daniel knew it. The dentil ceiling detail. The modern lighting. The whitewashed oak floor. The curved built-in dining table on a squatty green column. He built it the way he would have built it for a client who deserved the best he had — because she did.
Carissa was born June 25, 1985. The last coat of paint was barely dry.
A few months later, Ron Talcott knocked on the door. He was campaigning for a state Representative seat with his wife Gigi. Daniel opened the door.
Ron's facial expression was priceless.
It was as if he were peering into a candy shop at age ten — the dentil work, the vaulted ceiling, the lighting, the curved table on its green column — the whole interior landing all at once on a man who had knocked expecting a constituent and found a world instead.
Ron and Gigi became Daniel's first design-build clients.
Gigi won the seat.
Comp Design-Construction had its first commission. The output era was not approaching. It had arrived.
