Born in Munich, Germany to a seventeen-year-old mother. Her Guamanian stepfather, a US military soldier, brought the family to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio when she was thirteen. He taught her the foundational operating principle by doing it in front of her: most things are figure-out-able if you take them apart and understand the structure. Chris died in a Houston hospital at thirty-one. He had been managing kidney stone pain with over-the-counter antacids for months. A common consequence of antacids over time, especially in men: constipation. Constipation caused slow intestinal bleeding. Drinking fluids to compensate diluted vitamins and minerals. The cascade: anemia, fatigue, dizziness, cognitive impairment, sepsis, ammonia in the brain. He was afraid to go to the emergency room: "Mom, I don't want to go to the ER, catch COVID and die." When he finally went he was ambulanced to a trauma center. Three weeks later he died of acute stage four end-of-life liver disease.
The hospital would not facilitate a live liver donor transplant. Angelina's liver was available. He died anyway.
He did not know how ill he was until it was too late. That is a scotoma. That is the precise mechanism. That is why the framework exists. That is the answer to the question "why."
Scotiana did not escape the wound. Her first marriage did not survive COVID's weight.
