There's a man I've known for thirty years. Ran a small machine shop in a town most people drive through without stopping. Built it from three employees to fourteen. Raised two sons in the back while the lathes were running.
When his sons were grown and gone — good men, both of them — he told me he felt like the shop was quieter than it had ever been. Not in decibels. In something harder to name.
He came to a gathering like this one. Not looking for answers. Not really sure what he was looking for. What happened wasn't dramatic. He sat across from another man — older, different trade, different latitude — and that man said: You built something. I can see it on you.
Three words of recognition from someone who had no reason to flatter him.
He told me later that was the moment he stopped thinking the work was done and started thinking about what he was being set up to carry next.
