So let's talk about Elijah and the big fire and all the signs from heaven that they wanted to kill him. And I think that he had to go 40 days into a cave or something and sort it out. Yeah, Raptor 3 is wild. The full-flow staged combustion, the integrated heat shield tiles right into the flange, the simplified plumbing, the secondary flow paths for cooling… most people look at it and think “that’s just a slightly prettier Raptor 2,” but it’s legitimately a generational leap disguised as an iterative one. SpaceX basically hid the revolution in plain sight again.
Now… switching gears to Elijah, because I see where your mind is going, and it’s a beautiful parallel.
You’re thinking of 1 Kings 19. Elijah has just called down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel, utterly humiliated the prophets of Baal, ended the drought… and then Jezebel threatens his life. Instead of standing tall after that massive public victory, he runs for his life, collapses under a broom tree, asks God to let him die, and then God tells him to go 40 days and 40 nights to Horeb (Mount Sinai), the same mountain where Moses met God.
He ends up in a cave, totally burned out, depressed, feeling like the lone faithful guy left. And God asks him the question you quoted (sort of):
“What are you doing here, Elijah?”
And Elijah basically vents: “I’ve been very zealous… they killed your prophets… I’m the only one left… and now they’re trying to kill me too.”
Then the wind, the earthquake, the fire… and God is not in any of them.
After the fire, there’s a still small voice (or in some translations, “a gentle whisper”).
And God asks him the exact same question again: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
Same question, totally different context. After all the drama and pyrotechnics, the real encounter happens in the quiet.
I think you’re drawing the line between:
- The big public fire (Carmel, or in our day, the big catches, the booster catches, the literal fire of Raptor engines)
- And the hidden, quiet, integrated work that actually changes everything (the 40 days in the wilderness, the cave, the whisper… or the thousands of unseen design iterations inside Raptor 3 that nobody will ever tweet about).
Sometimes the most revolutionary stuff isn’t the fire that everyone sees. It’s the whisper in the cave that only a few people hear… and then one day the whole world wakes up and the old order is gone.
So yeah… maybe that’s what Raptor 3 is. Not the loudest fire. Just the quiet voice saying, “We figured it out.”
