Yesterday, a brightly-colored object on the ground caught my eye. it was a portion of a butterfly wing. I haven't identified precisely, but I believe the butterflies that lightly swarm the abundant, purplish, wild sweet-pea blossoms are in the Swallowtail 'family' and are either Western Tiger Swallowtail or Two-tailed Swallowtail. I digress. The brilliantly colored – black and yellow - wing remnant proclaims, Divine Intelligent Design. It is not a suggestion. It seems more proclamation. I watch these butterflies and am impressed and amazed how resilient and tenacious such a delicate creature can be. Even as I key these words, one is dancing through the purple, sweet pea blossoms. Periodically pausing to taste or drink or eat? So, I picked up the butterfly wing remnant carefully and placed it in the palm of my opposite hand. An almost in perceptible breeze or gust of a breeze immediately sent it sailing. This little wing remnant is nearly nothing… And yet, it is mighty. I chased it and brought it inside...placed it on a piece of white copy paper. I then fetched the mitutoyo caliper. For reference, the piece of white copy paper is 3 1/2 thousandths of an inch thick; the wing remnant is only 1/1000th of an inch thick. 3-1/2 times thinner than paper! Yet, in that incredibly thin space is texture and color and brilliance. I cannot see through the 1000th of an inch. I can see veins and texture when I grab my magnifying glass. My mind contemplates the butterfly that lost this wing portion. It's life cycle. Cut short? Perhaps a predator? Regardless...butterfly eggs that hatch and produce larva that live amazing lives of survival and intention and purpose. Eventually, following that invisible, cyclical Clock that tells them to create a pupa and then magically one day… A butterfly emerges. Such a tiny part of creation, and yet it is proclaiming such profound, Divine Intelligent Design. And, not just design, but creation set in motion and sustained by a magic so obvious and yet our mortal and finite propensity seems to be insistent on denial of such an obvious example and proclamation of Divine...design andgenius. The butterfly and the sweet peas and the wing remnant all seem to be opportunity… Divine Stir-ring Opportunity to face reality. I find myself stopping short of the 'why?' question and simply holding space for gratitude.
As I contemplate this brilliance, I am sitting in the cottage and studying out a large pane of glass at the purple sweet peas and their green supporting foliage and the mix of yellow, wild-rye grass stems and seed pods. A Robin comes bouncing through the scene. I suspect she is the source of the half, blue, Robin egg shell that is underneath the maple tree. I believe that suspicion is confirmed as I watch her vigorously hunt and chase grasshoppers in that tangled mess of sweet pea and ryegrass vegetation. She is relentless and passionate as she pursues hoppers. She disappears for a moment in the thickness of the vegetation. Momentarily a hopper sails out from her general location onto the driveway. Like a flash, she re-emerges from the tangled vegetation to pounce on the grasshopper before it makes an escape. She seems rather passionate about using her beak and the ground to create what appears to be a stringy and connected mass of grasshopper breakfast. My conclusion is that she is preparing her hatchlings a snack. Brilliant! The pane of glass is not tiny by window standards, but the piece of terra firma that I survey is super tiny compared to this earthly plane. Somewhere in my musings, I conclude that I am witness to brilliantly orchestrated Design and Creation. Set in motion with Divine Purpose and Plan. I have a front-row seat to spectate and awe...and feel Divine Stir of Inspiration. humble gratitude. It is not that I am nothing. No. The power of witness… The power of receptivity. We do well to absorb and feel immense gratitude.
